The SMB leader paradox
You know it: your IT drives your business — production, client relations, compliance, security. But at the same time:
- No time to manage IT yourself (you're running a business)
- No budget for a full-time CIO (€80-120K gross/year + charges)
- No visibility on what's priority, what's urgent, what can wait
Result: IT drifts without direction. Decisions are made in emergencies, budgets spiral, providers multiply, and no one reports to the leader.
The vCIO: what is it exactly?
A vCIO (virtual CIO, or fractional CIO) is an outsourced IT director who works part-time — a few days per month — to drive your IS strategy, structure your spending and coordinate your providers.
They don't replace your technical team (if you have one): they direct it. And if you don't have one, they manage the providers doing the operational work — like TIPTOP.
What a vCIO does (and doesn't do)
They do:
- Audit and mapping of your IS (hardware, software, contracts, risks)
- IT roadmap for 12-36 months (prioritised, budgeted)
- Budget management (FinOpsFinancial Operations — Discipline qui vise à optimiser les dépenses IT en alignant les coûts sur la valeur métier.) — no more end-of-year surprises
- Provider coordination (telecom, hosting, software vendors, security)
They don't:
- Daily user support (that's the helpdesk)
- Workstation setup (that's managed IT)
- Real-time cyber monitoring (that's the SOCSecurity Operations Center — Centre de surveillance cyber qui détecte et traite les incidents en continu.)
The vCIO doesn't do operational work — they ensure it's done properly, going in the right direction, and not costing more than necessary.
Why it's particularly relevant for multi-site businesses
A franchise network or multi-site business has specific IT challenges:
- Consistency : every site must have the same level of service, security, telephony
- Scalability : opening a site shouldn't be a 3-month IT project
- Visibility : the leader (or network head) must see everything at a glance
- Compliance : a network of 30 sites with 30 different security levels means 30 potential vulnerabilities
The vCIO is the conductor who guarantees this consistency — and maintains it over time.
At TIPTOP, the vCIO is Frédéric DUCOS
Not a junior fresh out of school. Not a remote consultant. The founder himself, 30 years in IT, 20 years of entrepreneurship, trained at CNAM, forged at Airbus, the French Ministry of Defence, RATP, La Poste.
Your vCIO at TIPTOP:
- Is your single point of contact for all strategic IT questions
- Participates in your board meetings on IS topics
- Presents a quarterly QBR (KPIs, incidents, budget, next steps)
- Documents your IS in a transferable way (no lock-in)
The vCIO in TIPTOP plans:
- CyberSérénité Business — QBR semestrielle, tableau de bord, conformité ANSSI
- CyberSérénité Premium — vDSI dédié (Frédéric DUCOS), QBR trimestrielle, conformité ANSSI/NIST/NIS2, documentation partagée
- CyberPILOT — gouvernance IT sur votre base existante
The exact scope depends on your plan. Contact us to learn more.
Your IT deserves a pilot — not a firefighter.
